LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska governor Dave Heineman has asked President Obama to suspend the Air Force's decision to locate its new Global Strike Command in Louisiana.
The Air Force announced last week that the command - along with 900 new military and civilian jobs - would go to Barksdale Air Force Base, passing over Nebraska's Offutt Air Force Base.
In a letter sent Monday to Obama, Heineman said Offutt received the highest evaluation of the five bases considered for the command. It scored 89 out of a possible 100 points, compared to Barksdale's 81.
On Friday, Nebraska Sens. Ben Nelson and Mike Johanns called on Secretary of Defense Robert Gates to investigate.
The Global Strike Command will consolidate control of the Air Force's nuclear-capable missiles and jet wings.
