CENTERVILLE, Iowa (AP) - A southern Iowa woman has been sentenced to probation after trying to burn down a church.
Diana Jean Royer, of Numa, was sentenced last week in Appanoose County. She pleaded guilty in February to setting the Livingston Cemetery Church on fire. She had faced up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
Court documents say that during an interview with law enforcement, Royer admitted trying to burn down the church last July 23.
The judge cited her lack of criminal record and longtime commitment to the community when sentencing Royer to three years probation and a $1,000 fine.
Royer said during the hearing that it was a terrible thing to do, and that she has paid more than $8,000 in restitution.
