
Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune syndrome where your body's immune system eats away at the protective sheath that covers your nerves.. interfering with the communication between your brain and the rest of your body. This can lead to problems talking... and using your muscles. But there is a class in Sioux City designed to keep people with MS going strong.
Exercise is important no matter your abilities. That's the message this class at CNOS in Dakota Dunes teaches its participants. Many of them have been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. "By being physically fit they can still do those things. They can still maintain an active lifestyle, like continue to work, or continue to do those things that are important for them," said Janet Limoges. Laura Lee Dow was the first member of the class when it started 3 years ago. When she first lifted weight, her strength was limited to a few pounds. "20," said Laura. "And how much can you lift now?" said Christy. "70," said Laura.
And she's not the only one seeing improvements. "My endurance and my balance, and general overall strength have improved a lot," said Jay. How? Twice a week, every Monday and Wednesday nights at 5:30, they meet up for class with Janet Limoges at CNOS. The class focuses on strength training, mixing dumbbells, strengthening bands, weight machines, cardio, and even yoga. "It may not slow the progression, but it may help them get through the progression, or get through that relapse faster," said Limoges. The group does each exercise for 30 seconds, then rests 30 seconds, and repeats each move 3 times. A formula designed to give them maximum benefit. And that's not the only benefit they find. The friendships are good for the soul. "It's just a good time. And before you know it, the exercise, our hour is gone," said Louie.
This weekend in Sioux City, folks will walk to raise money for Multiple Sclerosis research. The walk is at Chris Larsen Park this Saturday. Registration is at 9:00 am and it's free. The walk starts at 10. They're expecting over 200 walkers to participate.
