ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) - The Day County sheriff says a man allegedly shot and killed by a tribal police officer in northeast South Dakota over the weekend was Richard Bissonette, of Enemy Swim.
Day County Sheriff Barry Hillestad said Bissonette died at a hospital. He was believed to be in his early 20s.
The sheriff says a tribal police officer responded to a disturbance call Friday evening at a housing complex north of Waubay and began chasing Bissonette on foot from tribal land into Day County.
Hillestad said in a release that radio traffic indicated the tribal officer fired at Bissonette when he turned around to confront the officer in a threatening manner. The sheriff said Bissonette had a weapon, but he gave no other details.
