OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - It probably will be next week before U.S. Sen. Mike Johanns will be able to present a proposal that would require the government to obtain congressional approval for using TARP funds to take an ownership stake in any company.
The Nebraska Republican had hoped to attach the amendment to the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, but Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada on Thursday filed for cloture, which would end debate on the bill.
Johanns said he would offer the amendment at the next available opportunity.
His proposal comes on the heels of this week's news that the government may take a temporary 60% controlling interest in General Motors as part of the automaker's bankruptcy reorganization.
