HAINES, Ore. (AP) - Union Pacific says a cracked wheel on a freight car caused a May 29 derailment north of Baker City.
The derailment stalled traffic throughout the region for a day and has continued to hamper traffic along U.S. 30 near Haines.
A railroad spokesman with the Omaha, Neb.-based railroad says wheels are inspected regularly, but if a crack starts inside a wheel it can't be detected.
The derailment involved 15 cars of a 136-unit train.
One empty tanker contained phosphoric acid residue, which was removed by a hazardous materials team. No hazardous materials were spilled and no one was injured.
