Warrant: Cell phone GPS could put killer at crime scene

Posted:

DAKOTA CITY, NE (KTIV) - New details, tonight, about the man accused of raping and killing a three-year-old South Sioux City, Nebraska, girl, last month.

Twenty nine-year old De Jesus Melisio-Camacho has been charged with first-degree murder, and burglary.

Now, the results of two search warrants have been filed, one for the scene of the crime, and another for a cell phone.

The warrant for the phone could tell investigators where Melisio-Camacho was on the night of the killing.

The first search warrant was filed to search this mobile home in South Sioux City, Nebraska. It's the home, authorities say, the alleged killer-- De Jesus Melisio-Camacho-- broke into through a small window and sexually assaulted a three-year-old named Evelyn.

Court documents say she died of suffocation.

Results of the search warrant say authorities found evidence of forced entry... including a broken and removed window and frame. Also found was what police identify as "burglars tools'. No specifics were given.

Documents also say investigators say there was enough evidence to conclude that a homicide took place. The search warrant adds that authorities retrieved blood and DNA evidence, finger prints and possible weapons.

The second search warrant requested the call-detail records for a cell phone. While the documents don't say who the cell phone belongs to, they do state: "This information is necessary to the investigating officers in order to show that the suspect, Camacho, was at the location at the time of the murder and sexual assault as well as to document the time Camacho made calls and to whom the calls were made".

The warrant also adds they will use GPS information from the phone to determine that information.

Melisio-Camacho will be back in Dakota County court for an arraignment on June 29th.

According to court documents, Dakota County, Nebraska attorney, Kim Watson will be getting assistance on this case from the Nebraska Attorney general's office.

The official from the A-G's office will serve as the Special Deputy County Attorney; something Nebraska's attorney general says is common in cases like these.

"We understand that our job is to make sure that justice is served, and make sure that they guy that's responsible for this prosecuted and never sees the light of day," said Jon Bruning, Nebraska Attorney General.

Bruning also said his office is working on determining whether or not the state will seek the death penalty.

It has until June 29th to make that decision.
