PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - Officials with the Federal Emergency Management Agency are arriving in Pierre to help provide assistance to 14 counties and two American Indian reservations.
President Barack Obama earlier this week issued a disaster declaration for the 14 counties and portions of the Cheyenne River and Standing Rock reservations due to March snowstorms and subsequent flooding.
The declaration clears the way for federal assistance for state and local governments and some private nonprofits. A survey estimated more than $3.5 million in emergency costs and damages to public facilities such as roads and bridges.
State Public Safety spokeswoman Brooke Bohnenkamp says the FEMA staff will be touring damage sites, likely sometime next month.
