LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - An expert reviewing a troubled center for the developmentally disabled in Nebraska says in a report that progress is being made to correct problems, but "much remains to be done."
John McGee says in the report released Wednesday that the state showed leadership and courage following the decision early this year to move medically fragile residents out of the Beatrice State Developmental Center. The decision was made following the death of an 18-year-old state officials have acknowledged received inadequate care.
McGee praised the state for working to increase the number of community programs where former residents of the center can live.
The Beatrice center has repeatedly run afoul of federal regulators.
