NEW YORK (AP) - A person familiar with a New York investigation into the state's public pension fund says officials are pressing for a settlement that would allow ex-White House auto czar Steven Rattner to avoid civil charges.
Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (KWOH'-moh) is investigating the payment of millions of dollars in kickbacks from investment firms trying to raise money from the fund.
Rattner's former private equity firm, the Quadrangle Group, paid more than $1 million to 1 of the people indicted.
But a person familiar with the investigation tells The Associated Press that Cuomo has begun pressing Rattner and Quadrangle for settlements to avoid legal charges. The person wasn't authorized to discuss the talks publicly and spoke Tuesday on condition of anonymity.
Rattner resigned Monday as head of the White House task force leading the restructure of General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group LLC.
Spokesmen for Rattner and Cuomo have declined to comment.
