Neb. squirrel season opens Aug. 1

Associated Press - July 27, 2009 6:25 AM ET

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Squirrel hunting season begins Aug. 1, and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission says it's an opportunity to introduce young or novice hunters to a new outdoor activity.

The commission says a squirrel hunt in the woods can serve as an introduction to the pursuit of other game, such as waterfowl, pheasants, turkeys, and deer. It also may develop a novice's sense of stewardship of natural resources and appreciation for conservation.

Hunting permits cost $14 for residents and $81 for nonresidents and are good for hunting squirrels through the end of the season, which is Jan. 31. The daily bag limit is seven squirrels and the possession limit is 28.
