REE HEIGHTS, S.D. (AP) - Gov. Mike Rounds says a wind farm being built in Hand County is a credit to innovative thinking and planning by the project's partners.
Rounds and other officials attended a ceremony Tuesday as full construction begins on the Titan I Wind Farm, being built on a 7.500-acre site near Ree Heights.
The wind farm is owned by BP Wind Energy. In a release, BP and NorthWestern Energy said the electricity will be sold to NorthWestern for use by its South Dakota customers. The release says the wind farm - when in full operation - will generate enough electricity to power 7,500 average American homes.
The first phase could employ 175 workers and could be in commercial operation early next year.
John Graham, BP Wind Energy president, says large wind farms such as Titan are the long-term future of the wind energy business.
