SIOUX CENTER, Iowa (KTIV) -- It's National Farm Safety Week and with so much going on at the farm it can be easy to cut corners to save time, but safety on the farm should be on the top of everyone's mind.
Power take off's and moving parts are on a lot of equipment but there are guards that should be kept in place to keep everyone safe.
"I think the number one thing a farmer should do is keep all sheilds in place," said Mike Schouten, Manager of Dordt College Ag Stewardship Center, "Shields are there for a reason and that's to keep us from getting entangled."
It's also important to make sure you are not wearing lose clothing around PTO's to prevent getting entangled.
Schouten says moving parts turn at such a high rate of speed, accidents can happen in a matter of a second.
"Most of your PTO shafts are turning at 540 revolutions per minute, some of them are turning at a thousand revolutions per minute. You know a thousand revolutions per minute is seventeen times a second," said Shouten.
Schouten also encourages people to stay at least ten feet away from PTO's or other moving parts on equipment.
