INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (AP) - Because of the belief rural schoolhouses played a vital role in shaping the nation's culture, a movement is under way to preserve those buildings.
During a weekend conference in Independence on school preservation, Tama County Historical Society chairwoman Joyce Wiese said children can learn more from history by actually going to these one-room schools.
Wiese says she is trying to get the Haven schoolhouse, southwest of Chelsea, converted into a museum for educational purposes.
Wiese said she attended Whiskey Bottom schoolhouse in Tama County as a child. She said she enjoyed the one-on-one interaction the students had with each other. She added those attending the school was like a family.
Dale Williams of the Wisconsin Historical Society says his group found ways to incorporate their school museums into grade school curriculum.
