NIOBRARA, Neb. (AP) - The Army Corps of Engineers plans to build about 40 acres of sandbar habitat for two species of birds under the protection of the Endangered Species Act.
The work will begin next spring near river mile 842, across from an old boat ramp in Niobrara.
The corps says the sandbar will be used for nesting and foraging by interior least terns and the piping plover. Both species use sandbars from April until the end of August to nest, lay eggs and rear their young before flying south in late summer.
The work is scheduled to be finished by December 2010.
