Storm bearing down on SD

Associated Press - October 29, 2009 9:15 AM ET

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - The National Weather Service says a winter storm that has brought heavy snow to parts of the Rockies will drop up to 9 inches of snow in western South Dakota.

Various watches and warnings are in place for the western and central parts of the state Thursday, with the heavier amounts of snow expected in the west.

Late Wednesday, a reporting point near Deadwood checked in with 12.1 inches of snow. Ardmore, in Fall River County, reported 8.5 inches Thursday morning.

Forecasters say blowing and drifting snow will reduce visibilities and create problems for travelers.

The South Dakota Department of Transportation says its crews have been preparing for the storm. Officials are asking the public to avoid traveling if possible, and watch out for snow plows.
