Student threatened to shoot self, others arrested

Associated Press - October 30, 2009 12:34 PM ET

HARLAN, Iowa (AP) - Police in Harlan say a high school student has been arrested for allegedly making terrorist threats.

Authorities in Shelby County say 18-year-old Joey Barrell admitted writing notes in which he allegedly threatened to shoot "several students" and himself.

Harlan High School officials who learned of the note notified Harlan police of threat Thursday afternoon. Because the school dismissed early due to parent-teacher conferences, no lockdown was needed.

Barrell was charged with terrorist threats and taken to Shelby County Jail. If convicted on the charge, Barrell faces up to five-years in prison and a maximum fine of $7,500.
