Report: Plane that crashed near Sanborn, IA was out of gas

Posted:
SANBORN, Iowa (KTIV) -- A plane that crashed near Sanborn, Iowa, in June, may have run out of gas.

A report issued by the National Transportation Safety Board says before the single-engine Piper left Wisconsin, en route to South Dakota for a hunting trip, the plane was filled with 12 gallons of fuel.

But, witnesses say they overheard the pilot and passengers remark that that wouldn't be enough fuel to get them to their destination.

The same witness overheard the group talk about stopping to refuel at some point.

When the plane crashed, witnesses reported the engine "coughing, sputtering and quitting."

Investigators say the fuel tanks had only three-and-a-half cups of fuel in them at the time of the crash.

The crash killed all three men on board.
