Iowa group: Palin won't speak at November event

Posted:

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin won't headline a social conservative group's annual meeting next month in Des Moines, but the organization says she expressed interest in speaking before the group later.

The Iowa Family Policy Council asked Palin to speak at its Nov. 21 event and expressed optimism that she'd attend.

But in a statement released Friday, council spokesman Bryan English says the group knew it was a longshot because Palin would be in the midst of a book tour. Palin is releasing a memoir, "Going Rogue."

Council leaders say they were raising money to cover the costs of her appearance, prompting some to question whether she would be paid for a speech.

In the statement, English says Palin asked to speak before the group in the future and made clear she wouldn't accept money for her appearance.
