CHEROKEE, Iowa (KTIV) - Deployments to Afghanistan sometimes mean missing out on certain events back home, but one Airman recently found a way to ensure he was a part of his brother's big day.
While Second Lieutenant Bryon Kroger, of Cherokee, Iowa, was participating in a commissioning ceremony at Maxwell Air force Base in Alabama, Master Sergeant Roger Nelson was serving 7,500 miles away.
Kroger was still able to give his first salute as an officer to his half brother, via webcam. The first salute is an important stepping stone in a military career.
"When I first heard about the first salute ceremony, I knew I wanted to be a part of it, and then shortly thereafter, I got orders to deploy. Because of technology, I was able to be a part of this time honored tradition," said Master Sergeant Roger Nelson.
"It's really important to me. I'm really proud of the fact that he's over there serving our country, and it just makes it that much more special," added 2nd Lt. Bryon Kroger.
Nelson, by the way, has served in the military for 20 years.
