MUSCATINE, Iowa (AP) - Prosecutors in Muscatine County say a Mechanicsville woman has been arrested for allegedly attempting to extort $1 million from Iowans for Tax Relief and its chairman, David Stanley.
Muscatine County Attorney Gary R. Allison says 51-year-old Mary Katheryn Moravek was arrested without incident Tuesday afternoon and taken to the Muscatine County Jail.
According to the criminal complaint, authorities monitored a telephone conversation in which Moravek spoke with Stanley and reportedly agreed to accept a lesser sum of $30,000 to drop allegedly false allegations of wrongful conduct.
The attempted extortion charge is a class "D" felony subject to a maximum penalty of 5 years in prison and a $75,000 fine.
