SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) - To get younger students excited about preparing for college, Iowa is putting middle schools students on campus, already.
Tuesday, about 90 West Middle eighth grade students toured Morningside College as part of the 'Gear Up' Iowa federal grant program.
They learn more about college life and what a post secondary education can do.
The grant program also provides academic planning and counseling, job shadowing and free ACT prep-tests.
"This money follows this cohort of eighth graders, and it goes through high school with them. And, then when they graduate, they have an opportunity to receive a scholarship from this money to attend an Iowa school," said Jen Petersen, West Middle School Counselor.
In fact, $16.8 million in federal scholarship money will be distributed to the students.
"We had a great tour from all of the students here, and it's a great experience," said Lane Christinsen, West Middle Schools student.
"You realize that it will be sooner than you think, and you know what it's like... so you're preparing for it," said Haley Carr, West Middle School student.
Sioux City's West Middle and North Middle schools are both taking part in Gear Up Iowa.
There are 31 schools statewide.
