PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - The state capitol Christmas tree has started its trip from Rapid City to Pierre.
The 45-foot Black Hills spruce was cut down Monday at Camp Rapid and loaded onto a truck.
Retired Chief Warrant Officer Richard Walker said he planted the tree in 1949, when it was just 3 feet tall.
Walker said he originally got the tree from Pierre, and he said it's an honor that it's going back there for display in the capitol rotunda.
A lighting ceremony is planned for Nov. 24.
