LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - State lawmakers who brokered a compromise between abortion opponents and University of Nebraska researchers on embryonic stem cell research say the deal does not prohibit either side from lobbying the Board of Regents.
There has been disagreement over whether abortion opponents can ask the board to impose stricter rules for the research.
A 2008 law prohibits the use of state resources for creating or destroying embryos for research.
To get the measure passed, abortion opponents agreed not to push for further legislation if certain conditions were met. Some supporters of the researcher have said that agreement extends to the regents.
But a letter from Sens. Mike Flood, Steve Lathrop and Brad Ashford says none of the discussions included the regents.
