OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Federal judicial officials have chosen a law clerk to serve as the Nebraska district's newest magistrate judge.
Fifty-1-year-old Cheryl Renae Zwart of Lincoln is set to succeed Lincoln-based U.S. Magistrate David Piester, who retired in August.
Zwart's appointment to an 8-year term isn't final until she successfully passes background checks, which is expected to take three months.
Among their duties, magistrate judges handle preliminary matters in civil and criminal cases.
Zwart, who is a Sioux Falls, S.D., native, was among 23 people to apply for the post. Applications were reviewed by an appointed panel of attorneys and other community members.
District judges ultimately made the selection.
