South Sioux City, Neb., attorney suspended

Associated Press - November 13, 2009 11:55 AM ET

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - A South Sioux City attorney accused of not responding to judicial officials handling a complaint about his work has been suspended from practicing law.

In a ruling issued Friday, the Nebraska Supreme Court suspended Bryan Smith Jr. for six months. He's also been ordered to return fees collected from a man who hired Smith in 2007 to handle a child-custody case in western Iowa.

Henry Johnson filed a grievance with the state's Counsel for Discipline saying Smith failed to make progress on his case and was unavailable when concerns arose.

The Counsel for Discipline filed charges against Smith last year, but Smith never responded.

Phone numbers listed for Smith's office have been disconnected. He didn't immediately respond to an e-mail sent Friday.
