SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - Politicians are getting financial headaches and doctors are facing tough choices as more South Dakotans are living in poverty.
Today, more than 1 of every 10 South Dakotans are on food stamps. The use of food stamps soared 34 percent in the past.
And participation in Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program rose 6 percent the past year to reach 109,000, almost 1 of 7 state residents.
Sen. John Thune says the House of Representatives health reform plan would raise income eligibility for Medicaid to 150 percent of poverty.
Gov. Mike Rounds says South Dakota's share could be $33 million a year.
