ELCA splits over gay clergy

Associated Press - November 21, 2009 12:45 PM ET

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - South Dakota's Lutherans soon might be faced with a choice: stay in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America or split to join a new church body being formed because of divisions over gay clergy.

A conservative faction known as Lutheran CORE says it's speeding up its timeline to form the new denomination.

Brandon pastor Erma Wolf is vice chairwoman of the steering committee of CORE, an acronym for Coalition for Reform.

Wolf says the group has been surprised with how insistent voices are saying that they're not going to stay.

ELCA spokesman John Brooks expresses hope that church members ultimately would opt to stay in the denomination as it strives to be "a place for all people despite any differences we might have on any issues."
