Sioux City among Iowa cities trying to hold bar owners accountable

Posted:

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Nine of Iowa's biggest cities are seeking a law to hold bar owners more responsible for crimes that happen in parking lots or other nearby premises.

The move follows attempts by cities to better address violent incidents reported in the past few years outside taverns across the state.

A proposal that will go before the Legislature could also be a tool for cities to go after the licenses of those who knowingly over-serve customers who wind up in fights.

Lynn Walding, administrator of the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division, says the proposal applies only when there is some culpability by the owner.

The cities backing the plan are Ames, Cedar Rapids, Council Bluffs, Davenport, Des Moines, Dubuque, Iowa City, Sioux City and West Des Moines.
