MARCUS, Iowa (KTIV) - Some people near Marcus Iowa decided to go for the real Christmas Tree this year, but they didn't buy it at the store, rather they went to the farm and cut it down themselves.
Christmas is in the air at Country Pines Farm, as the Lux family from Cherokee Iowa cuts down what they say is their perfect find this year, but they're not just cutting down a Christmas Tree they're starting something new as a family.
"We just wanted to start a family tradition on coming out to the tree farm," said Kim Lux of Cherokee, Iowa.
It's something many families are doing, and for this one, they say a cool Sunday afternoon is a perfect time.
"You see the combines going and the tractors in the background, and you know Christmas is going to be coming up soon," said Lux.
Searching through rows and rows of trees, others are on the hunt as well.
"My parents sent us out here to get a live tree this year because we didn't want a fake one," said Mollie Keith who is visiting her family from Washington.
It's worth the time it takes to find the right one.
"Oh yeah it's a lot of fun," said Keith.
Once it's cut down, the adventure isn't over. Then it's time to take the tree back, shake it, and have it cleaned. It's a process that keeps the little ones intrigued. While this seasonal search is sure to leave lasting memories, part of it will follow them home.
"The pine smell is part of Christmas," said Lux.
