SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) - After more than a decade of public service, Sioux City state representative Wes Whitead won't run for re-election to his seat in the Iowa House.
Whitead calls the decision "sweet and sour," but says he wants to spend more time with his family.
The Democrat served six terms in the statehouse. The 76-year-old says he made the decision this summer, but thoughts of retiring from politics began when he was down in Des Moines earlier this year. Rep. Wes Whitead, (D) Sioux City, said, "I gave it some thought when I was down there last time at the end of the session. I went 50 hours without sleep. It just kind of took me a long time to get over it, and I just got to thinking well maybe it is time to give it up."
Whitead says he wishes he could have done more for the middle class as a state representative. But, he's most proud of legislation he helped pass increasing the minimum wage.
