Iowa City curfew appears likely

Associated Press - December 1, 2009 7:34 AM ET

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - A proposed curfew has apparently gained the support of the Iowa City City Council, two months after the council put off a vote to test a grass roots neighborhood effort.

The council will vote on the curfew on Tuesday night, but four council members said at a work session on Monday that they support the curfew, giving it the votes needed to pass a second reading.

Residents have said they formed a group to would work with teenagers to address problems of increased juvenile crime and violence.

Councilman Matt Hayek says a neighborhood effort and police curfew could work together.

The neighborhood group, Safe Neighborhoods Coalition, says it has surveyed residents and plans to hold meetings and development recommendations early next year.
