WYMORE, Neb. (AP) - Your basic win-win:
Students get a day off, and the local food pantry has plenty to feed hungry people during the holidays in the southeastern Nebraska town of Wymore.
Superintendent Lee Hall says Southern High School student council members proposed a deal: If the school could collect twice the food collected last year, 750 pounds, could the half-day of school Dec. 22 be eliminated?
He agreed.
The 300 students and 90 staffers at Southern High School then collected more than six times the 2008 total.
Organizers say 4,950 pounds of nonperishable items was delivered the Friday before Thanksgiving to the Wymore Food Pantry.
On Monday, pantry coordinator Ruby Hardin said the donation of nearly 2 1/2 tons covers the community needs for two months.
