SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - A coalition of health groups ranks South Dakota 10th for the amount of money spent to prevent kids from smoking and to help smokers quit.
It reports that the $6 million spent annually on tobacco prevention and cessation programs is just over half of the spending recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The study finds that nearly one quarter of the state's high school students smoke and 900 kids become regular smokers every year.
Groups that participated in the study include the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, American Lung Association and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
