OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - A 21-year-old Nebraska man who died in 2006 but donated his organs to others will be honored on a Rose Parade float this year.

Thomas Varney the Fifth will be 1 of 77 people pictured on the New Year's Day float in Pasadena, Calif. Varney was shot and killed in his hometown of Arnold, Neb., during Christmas break from the University of Wyoming.

The Nebraska Organ Recovery System helped arrange for Varney's image to be part of the float to draw attention to the need for organ donors.

Officials estimate that more than 105,000 people in the United States need a life-saving organ transplant. Nearly 20 people die each day in this country waiting for the organ they so desperately need to save their lives.
