ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) - In some states, such as Minnesota, high school students are assessed fees to take part in sports or music activities.
That's not the case in South Dakota, where public schools are not allowed to charge students a fee to take part in extracurricular activities.
Aberdeen Central principal Jason Uttermark hopes fees are never implemented for activities. He thinks if students were charged to take part in band, for example, that participation would suffer.
Uttermark says that anything that causes kids to not have an equal opportunity to participate in something tugs at his heartstrings.
One Aberdeen area principal, however, notes that sometimes students foot the bill for some costs indirectly.
