WASHINGTON (AP) - Three programs in South Dakota have been awarded federal grants aimed at strengthening rural communities.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack on Thursday announced the awarding of $6.5 million to programs in 18 states. The grants are meant to promote economic growth in rural areas.

The Northeast South Dakota Community Action Program based in Sisseton and South Dakota State University each will receive more than $250,000. The Rural Learning Center based in Howard has been awarded a $225,000 grant.

The funds come through the U.S. Department of Agriculture as part of a rural community development initiative program.
