BEATRICE, Neb. (AP) - More than 60 acres of restored tallgrass prairie has been burned at the Homestead National Monument of America in southeast Nebraska. Officials say yesterday's burn was done to ensure the prairie parcel continued to thrive. Homestead Superintendent Mark Engler says such fires are used to control woody plants, invasive species and reduce thatch.
O'NEILL, Neb. (AP) - A driver has died after his vehicle collided with a semitrailer in northern Nebraska. The accident happened Wednesday morning outside of O'Neill. Holt County Attorney Thomas Herzog says the man's westbound vehicle crossed the center line of U.S. Highway 20 and struck the eastbound big rig.
GERING, Neb. (AP) - The Minatare Village Board and the Gering City Council have accepted an agreement regarding the Scotts Bluff County Communications Center. Their decisions earlier this week mean they will join the six other county communities in funding upgrades at the dispatch center. Gering and Minatare had gone to court in December to ensure the county wouldn't stop providing them with emergency dispatch services.
CEDAR CREEK, Neb. (AP) - A former village clerk in eastern Nebraska has been accused of embezzling nearly $80,000. Sixty-nine-year-old Mary Terry of Cedar Creek is charged with felony theft by deception. An affidavit says Terry wrote checks to herself without approval from the village board.
