OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - The utility that owns the troubled Fort Calhoun nuclear power plant in eastern Nebraska says it hopes to have the plant ready to operate by the end of June. But word came yesterday that Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials are far from allowing the facility to restart.
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Authorities say Nebraska's preliminary unemployment rate declined to 3.7% in April after registering 3.8% for four straight months. The Nebraska Labor Department says in a report released yesterday that the rate was three-tenths of a point lower than in April 2012 and less than half the national April rate of 7.5% for this year.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - The Nebraska Supreme Court says Omaha school officials violated a student's constitutional rights by searching his truck for marijuana when it was parked on a public street. Court records show Justis Puchalla (pooh-HA-la) was 17 when the incident occurred near Millard West High School grounds in August 2010. The Nebraska Supreme Court on Friday ordered a 19-day school suspension expunged from Puchalla's record.
LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - An Omaha-area woman who survived the 1979 killings of her family in New Mexico says she "went into a tailspin" upon hearing that the killer, her stepfather, will be eligible for parole later this year. The New Mexico Supreme Court ruled Monday that Clifton Skidgel is entitled to a parole hearing in September after serving 10 years of a second life sentence. Jackie Nasiatka was 11 years-old when she was wounded and her mother and three siblings killed in Las Cruces.
