COLUMBUS, Neb. (AP) - Union Pacific plans to tear down its old depot in Columbus early next year, ending its more than 100 years of service. The railroad says the building is only 12 feet from the rails - too close for public safety. The Columbus Telegram says city officials looked into moving the depot but determined the estimated $750,000 cost would have been too high.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska's U.S. Senate race will feature another independent on the November ballot. The secretary of state's office says Lincoln businessman Todd Watson has submitted enough valid signatures to appear on the ballot with Republican Ben Sasse, Democrat Dave Domina and independent Jim Jenkins. They are running for the seat held by U.S. Sen. Mike Johanns, who isn't seeking re-election.

SCOTTBLUFF, Neb. (AP) - Authorities in Scottsbluff have been joined by a Philadelphia-based crime-solving organization to help with a cold case. The Scottbluff Star-Herald says The Vidocq (vee-DAWK') Society is helping find out who killed Jason Vesper nearly 6½ years ago. The society includes a profiler, FBI agents and experts in forensics. It meets each month to discuss crimes, focusing on unsolved deaths and disappearances.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Three people have been taken into custody after a car chase that began with gunshots from a deputy. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office says the three were arrested after their vehicle was stopped on U.S. Highway 275 just inside Dodge County. The Sheriff's Office says as the deputy approached the car, the driver turned it around and accelerated toward the deputy, who opened fire. No one in the car was injured. Neither was the deputy.
