FREMONT, Neb. (AP) - Fremont city officials are asking a court to determine whether the city can legally enact a proposed ordinance aimed at curbing illegal immigration.
City Attorney Dean Skokan (SKO-kun) filed the request for a judgment Wednesday in Dodge County District Court.
City officials have a petition in hand that seeks to bar anyone in Fremont from hiring or renting to illegal immigrants. The Dodge County clerk must certify that it contains 3,100 valid signatures to force a special election on the measure.
The council voted down a similar ordinance last summer.
City officials have voiced concerns that such a measure could make the city vulnerable to lawsuits, primarily because the federal government maintains authority on immigration law.
