SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -- In a few weeks, NFL training camps open up around the nation.

Siouxland always has a few players on lineups, but for the first time in nine seasons...Matt Chatham won't be a part of one.

The North high and USD grad has put in his retirement papers and called it a career in the National Football League.

Chatham played in nearly 100 games, most of them as a member of the New England Patriots...where he was a part of three Super Bowl Championships.

Playing mostly special teams, the linebacker finished with more than 120 tackles, three sacks...and this fumble recovery that he took in for a touchdown against the Giants in 2003.

But injuries kept him out of the lineup last season, and the wear-and-tear of the NFL has caught up with the 32-year-old...so he's called it a career.

Matt Chatham says, "The last couple of years have been rough. I'm having a minor neck surgery in August, kind of clear out some issues that have been bothering me. That's not why I'm done, but it's one of the things that makes it a little easier to walk away. The foot, the neck, you get a little older and...I got a tremendous amount from this game, but I'm ready for something else now."

Now living in Massachusetts, there's no rest in retirement...as Chatham is going back to school.

He'll be attending Babson College, which is the number one ranked school in the nation for entrepreneurship.

Chatham says, "It's tremendously competitive, an amazing program out there. I'm going into entreprenurial studies, so I'm looking to do start-ups and launch a new company. So look for a new crepe franchise from my wife and I here, in the next couple of years."

Chatham still plans to come back to Sioux City, running the annual "Soft Bowl" charity softball game at Lewis and Clark Park.
