Relay for Life honors cancer survivors, remembers those who lost fight

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -- Almost all of us know someone who has been impacted by cancer. In Woodbury County alone, more than 500 men, women and children will be diagnosed this year.

But an event tonight takes steps in the fight against cancer. It's the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. Dozens of cancer survivors took the first official lap to kick things off -- some sharing their stories as inspiration to others.

"It's just great to see that there is that many survivors out here, it gives us hope and lots of support to see that many people doing this," said honorary co-chair Billie Umbach.

Tonight, hundreds of candles or luminaries were lit around the track, each in the name of someone who has battled cancer. The names of each person were read.

Walkers will be on the track at memorial field all night, with closing ceremonies at 6:00 Saturday morning.
