SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -- Turning 50 is a milestone many people dread. But one Sioux City woman isn't just taking it in stride, she's using her big day to help find a cure for cancer.
Dozens of Dee Sturgeon's friends showed up throughout the afternoon and evening at the Sanford Center to help ring in the big 5-0.
Dee serves as a chairperson for the American Cancer Society and instead of the typical cards and gifts, she asked her friends to donate to the cause by decorating a luminary bag.
The goal: 50 bags or $500. But Sturgeon says they did much better than that, raising more than $700.
Sturgeon says, "We blew it out of the water. We've done awesome. A lot of people have made donations, a lot of people gave more than ten dollars."
Friends also marked Dee's big day by giving the luminaries a test lighting. They'll be used at next year's "Relay for Life."
