Juvenile drug court could be lost through budget cuts

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -- One area of the judicial branch that could be completely cut under Governor Culver's budget cuts is juvenile drug court. The drug court helps up to 400 juveniles, every year.

The head of drug court, Gary Niles, believes the program was a target for the cuts because the number of people serviced seems small.

However, Niles says, the $300,000 per year cost of operating the court pales in comparison to the potential cost for sending the juveniles through further treatment, which could cost taxpayers around $50,000 per person.

Juvenile drug court is funded through June 2010 and Niles hopes to save it by getting it in next year's legislature, where it can be brought up for debate.
