SCPD now accepting crime tips via texting

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -- The Sioux City Police Department has its own crime stoppers line, and now you can text your crime tips.

The police department now accepts Crime Stopper tips via cell phone texts in addition to the regular tip phone line.

If you have a tip you would like to text, you should sent it to 'CRIMES' or 2-7-4-6-3-7. Make sure to begin your message with the letters S-C-P-D-T-I-P, so it gets routed to the right place.

The tip is then sent to a central server location in Canada and anonymously forwarded to the police department, which says your tips can break the case.

"We rely on the community heavily to provide us information and very often its that little bit, that little piece of the puzzle that we're missing that a lot of these tips provide," said Jeremy McClure, Crime Prevention Officer.

Since Sioux City joined Crime Stoppers in the 1980s, it has gotten more than 6,000 tips, which have lead to over 300 crimes solved and over 200 arrests. Thirty-three-thousand dollars in rewards have been given to Sioux City tipsters.
