The Mayor's Youth Commission helps area 8th graders learn skills

Sioux City, IOWA (KTIV) - Students from around Sioux City put aside their books to work on their leadership skills.

Monday, eighth graders took part in the Mayor's Youth Commission Leadership Forum. High school students, who lead the forum, taught the eighth graders about building leadership skills and working together.

The goal is for the kids to get to know students from other schools, find leaders among them, and create new friendships.

Event organizers say younger students learn more from their peers than adults that's why they let the high schoolers lead the day.

"What they're doing is they're facilitating the entire day today. It's not adult facilitated. It's actually the high school youth that are facilitating the activities for the eighth graders," said Linda Phillips, Executive Director, Siouxland Cares.

To show student on how to work together they use physical, problem-solving games.

These lessons which one student says, can be used in and out of school.

"Teach them not through just sports, but even in their classroom and through the community," said Caitlyn Glidden, Sioux City North High School Student.

More than 50 eighth grade students took part in today's events.
