SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb. (KTIV) -- Folks gathered in South Sioux City Thursday night for the Chamber of Commerce's annual banquet.
Awards were handed out to local leaders, teachers, people who work with youth, and the ambassador of the year.
But the biggest attraction was probably one of Nebraska's favorite native sons: Tom Osborne. Currently the University of Nebraska's athletic director, Osborne coached the Huskers for 25 years, served in Congress, and in the early '90s, started a youth mentoring program that's still going strong. He spoke about that program's successes.
"It cuts down drop-out rates, drug abuse, teenage pregnancy and I think most communities benefit if they have something like that," Osborne said.
The program, called "Teammates," mentors more than 3,000 kids in Nebraska. South Sioux City has its own local chapter.
