EPA fines Magellan Pipeline $46K for spill in Iowa

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) -- An Oklahoma oil company has been fined about $46,000 for an oil spill in Iowa and for failing to respond properly during a drill at its oil storage facility in south-central Kansas.

The Environmental Protection Agency's regional office in Kansas City, Kan., said Tuesday that Magellan Pipeline Co., of Tulsa, Okla., will pay a $46,200 civil penalty as part of a consent agreement.

The fine stems in part from a diesel oil spill in March from Magellan's pipeline in Milford, Iowa. The spill dumped about 5,000 gallons of oil into a tributary of the Little Sioux River.

The EPA also said the company did not respond as required during a facility response drill conducted during a surprise inspection in 2009 at Magellan's storage facility in Valley Center, Kan.
