Deputies remind kids to have fun but be safe on their bikes

Sloan, IOWA (KTIV) - Summer is a time for fun but it is also a time for kids to remember safety.

Monday, a Woodbury County Sheriff's Department deputy gave a bicycle safety presentation in Sloan, Iowa.

Deputy Kevin West showed kids bike maintenance, talked about rules of the road and reminded them to be aware .

West also told kids to wear bright colors when biking and also wear a helmet at all times.

"We just want to remind the kids when they are out having fun on their bikes that safety is always number one. So we just want to remind them of a few safety rules so that they can have fun on their bikes but they are safe and that they have a great time," said Kevin West, Woodbury County Sheriff's Department Deputy.

Mercy Medical Center nurses were also on hand to explain the importance of wearing a helmet at all times when riding a bike.

Kids say they learned some helpful tips Monday.

"I learned always wear your helmet and always stop at stop signs and safety comes before fun," said Carah Drees, Sloan, IA.

Woodbury County Deputies also gave another presentation Monday in Cushing, Iowa and they will be holding more bicycle safety classes later in the summer.
