Soldier remembers community support before deployment

STORM LAKE, Iowa (KTIV) -- For some members of the 334th, this isn't their first deployment.

Sergeant First Class Louis DeRoos spent 23 months in Iraq.

To help him and his family prepare for deployment, about 30 people came out to his Aurelia, Iowa home back in May and painted his horse barn, feed shed and even replaced a steel roof.

It was a surprise effort and not easy chores, according to DeRoos.

Thursday, he says he's ready to go, but won't forget what his community has done for him.

Sergeant First Class Louis DeRoos, US Army National Guard said, "It was awesome. It was overwhelming to know that so many people cared and were willing to give their whole Saturday to help me out."

DeRoos also says he enjoyed the extra time he was able to spend with his family as a result of everyone's help.
