NORTH SIOUX CITY, SD (KTIV) - This entire week, the North Sioux City-Dakota Valley Recreational complex in South Dakota is hosting the VFW 15-16 year old Regional baseball tournament. The grand prize for these young athletes is a trip to the State baseball tournament in Wagner, South Dakota on August 13th.
Five Siouxland teams made up of 15 and 16 year olds, Dakota Valley, Canton, Beresford, Vermillion, and Elk-Point Jefferson are competing in the tournament. Tonight, Dakota Valley and EP-J met on the diamond, with the Panthers winning 11-6.
Players say getting to play more than just high school ball, and possibly heading to state with athletes their own age is a thrilling part of the tournament.
"It's kids your own age. You don't play with everybody. It's kind of cool to be with the kids your own age and grade and go to state with them," said Evan Steemken, Dakota Valley Pitcher.
"We look forward and want to win every year. It's never been the outcome that I wanted, but it's fun and we enjoy it," said Brock Zeller, Elk Point Jefferson Pitcher.
"Track is a little bit more important to me in the school year than baseball is, so this gives me another opportunity to play baseball and run track at the same time.," said Madison Landeen, Beresford Outfielder.
The Championship game is Friday night at 6 PM at Dakota Valley.
